What kind of leather is Wildwood’s brown leather and how do I take care of it?
The brown Kodiak leather is a rugged, full-grain, chrome and oil- tanned leather. Its thickness ranges from 1.6 - 2.0 mm. Made from imported cowhide, it is soft, pebbled and slouchy, with a pronounced, attractive grain. It will burnish and patina with wear, showcasing its natural tones and inherent characteristics. It's a great choice for an everyday bag that you don’t have to be too careful with. However, for extreme damage (heat, mildew, exploding pens), we recommend professional help at the Wildwood Bag Spa!
Wipe down leather with a microfiber cloth to remove residual dust. To clean suede panels, dry vacuum or use a suede brush. Avoid heat + don’t store in direct sunlight. Contain spills as quickly as possible by blotting with a dry cloth and don't rub– the Kodiak leather is very resilient!
*Please note that brown Kodiak leather may transfer color to light-colored clothing or surfaces, especially with friction. Treat it carefully just like you would with a pair of dark wash jeans!
Because this leather is oil- tanned, it already has some water resistance. For waterproofing, we use Sno-Seal on the smooth leather and Cadillac Water Repellent Spray on the suede panels, though any brand of suede water + stain protector would likely work. These treatments should be done on new or recently cleaned leather, so as not to trap in existing dirt.
Saddle Soap will clean + refresh the smooth leather panels. We use Fiebing's, following their directions. White or yellow saddle soap works for all leather colors. We also use Fiebing's Aussie Leather Conditioner on the smooth leather panels, following the manufacturer's directions.
For suede panels, we recommend a suede brush. For spot cleaning, we use Omnidaim by Saphir. For all-over cleaning of the suede panels, Kiwi Spray-on Suede Cleaner is very effective.

What kind of leather is Wildwood’s black leather and how do I take care of it?
We use two different types of beautiful black leather for our bags!
For our Original Wildwood Bags, Slings, Zip Bags and Shell bags, we use black harness leather:
What kind of leather is Black Harness leather and how do I take care of it?
Our black harness leather is a pebbled, full-grain, natural leather crafted in Italy from European cow hides. Its thickness ranges from 1.4-1.6 mm. It has a soft hand and is chrome tanned in Virginia with an aniline finish followed by a soft clear wax treatment. It will burnish and patina with wear, showcasing its natural tones and inherent characteristics.
Wipe down leather with a Microfiber cloth to remove residual dust. For suede panels, dry vacuum or use a suede bush. Avoid heat + direct sunlight. Contain spills as quickly as possible. Blot with a dry cloth, don’t rub.
*Medium and light-colored leathers may pick up color from dark garment-dyed or pigment-dyed clothing, so be careful of this.
If waterproofing is desired, we recommend Sno-Seal for the smooth leather and Cadillac Water Repellent Spray or Saphir Super Invulner for the suede panels. We have found that the harness leather usually doesn't show water spots as long as it is left to dry untouched, so waterproofing isn't necessary for normal use.
Harness responds very well to Saddle Soap. We use Fiebing's, following their directions, for the smooth leather panels. White or yellow saddle soap work for all leather colors, black soap will even out the tone of black leather if needed. We generally do not use leather conditioner on our harness leather, just saddle soap. For grease stains, sprinkle with cornstarch and cover with a damp cloth. After an hour, remove cloth, dry with a cool blow dryer, vacuum, and brush with a soft nylon-brush. Treated areas may darken slightly, but oven time the leather's natural burnishing will gradually even out any discoloration.
For suede panels, we recommend a suede brush and spot cleaning with Omnidaim by Saphir.

What kind of leather is the basketweave (brown or black) and how do I take care of it?
Our Basketweave Leather is imported Chrome-tanned cowhide (not full grain) and its thickness ranges from 1.2-1.6mm. The basketweave pattern is imprinted onto the leather which means there are no holes.
Wipe down leather with a microfiber cloth to remove residual dust. Avoid heat and don't store in direct sunlight. Contain spills as quickly as possible. Blot with a dry cloth, don't rub.
Basketweave leather will soften and burnish over time, developing a patina.
We do not offer waterproofing for basketweave leather, due to its inherent characteristics.

White or yellow saddle soap work for all leather colors, black soap will even out the tone of black leather if needed. For grease stains, sprinkle with cornstarch and cover with a damp cloth. What kind of leather is your gold and iridescent opal leather and how do I take care of it?
Our gold leather is a deerskin, chrome tanned leather. Our iridescent opal leather is cowhide and chrome tanned, originating from Italy. Both leathers range from 1.2-1.6mm in thickness.
Metallic leathers are made by applying a thin coating to the surface of the tanned leather. The foil's heat-bonded to create an even finish. This means it is more delicate and vulnerable than a natural leather finish, and should be treated with care. Scuffs cannot be repaired. Wipe down leather with a microfiber cloth to remove residual dust. Always use a light hand, never rub harshly. Avoid heat and don’t store in direct sunlight. Contain spills as quickly as possible by blotting with a dry cloth, don’t rub.
We do not recommend waterproofing for heat-bonded finishes since this finish will repel water.
Condition metallic or iridescent leather with a gentle foam conditioner suited for metallics. Avoid oil-based conditioners and never use alcohol. Use minimal product and handle gently. Wipe with a clean, damp cloth and air -dry.
